DON'T CALL FOR HELP
MAYDAY CALLS .... "BAD FOR BUSINESS"
JANUARY 1999.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority have confirmed reports
that airline pilots are reluctant to follow procedures when confronted
by airborne emergency situations. Major incidents such as engine failure
and seriously ill passengers, have not been reported as emergencies.
A British Airways pilot claimed
that aircrew were reluctant to issue a "Mayday" call in case it gave bad
publicity to the airline. "We don't always declare an emergency -
its bad for business - bookings can fall away".
